Kanudo is the word this whole night is built around
Say Kanudo to anyone in Gujarat and they know exactly which baby you mean.
It comes from Kana, a pet name for Krishna, with the diminutive -udo stacked on top the way Hindi adds -oo or -ya to a child's name. A Kanudo song is never about grown Krishna the diplomat or the charioteer — it is always about the toddler who steals dahi, hides from his mother Yashoda, and gets away with everything because he is impossibly cute. Dhan Ma Chhel Kanudo Govadiyo and Mare Kanaiya Ne Malva Na Kod both work that same joke: a whole village indulging one troublesome baby.
