Auto Rickshaw Songs: The 72 Tracks Playing Off the Dash Speaker

Auto rickshaw songs come out of a small speaker taped under the dashboard, wired with red and green cable to a phone clipped near the handlebar, and they are usually a whole film soundtrack playing straight through. Seventy-two of them run on the player above — and they sit noticeably later than the truck or bus rotation.

The short version

  • What it is: 72 romantic Hindi film songs, roughly 1995 to 2006.
  • Who is on it: Kumar Sanu, Alka Yagnik, Udit Narayan, Sonu Nigam.
  • The tell: whole soundtracks, not single hits. Four songs from Aarzoo alone.
  • Where to hear it: the player at the top of this page. No sign-up.

What an auto actually plays

The equipment sets the repertoire, and in an auto the equipment is poor. One small unpowered speaker, taped under the dash, competing with a two-stroke engine and three open sides. Nothing built on production survives that. A strong vocal line does.

Which is why auto wala songs are almost entirely romantic playback: Kumar Sanu, Alka Yagnik, Udit Narayan, Sonu Nigam. Songs where the melody carries and the arrangement is decoration. Strip the arrangement away, as an auto speaker does, and the song still works.

The other constraint is the trip length. A ride is eight minutes. The driver is not curating anything for you; you have simply walked in halfway through his afternoon.

The source playlist runs to 99 entries. Fifteen of those already appear in the bus driver room on this site, and a few more are untitled uploads, so they have been dropped — each room here should be worth visiting on its own.

Whole albums, not greatest hits

Scan the film column and something jumps out. Four songs from Aarzoo. Four from Tere Naam. Four from Dil Hai Tumhaara. Three from Humraaz. Two each from Tum Bin, Ghulam, Saathi, Dilwale, Ek Rishtaa, Chori Chori Chupke Chupke.

No human curating a favourites list produces that shape. This is what a folder of downloaded albums looks like when it plays through on shuffle-off.

And that is the honest difference worth naming: the auto rotation is an album collection, where the barber shop rotation is a hit list. A barber's thirty songs were each chosen. An auto's seventy-two arrived in blocks of four, because somebody downloaded Aarzoo once and never deleted it.

Why the auto runs later than the bus

Compare the years. The bus and truck rooms are anchored in the 1990s. This one sits mostly between 1999 and 2006.

The reason is the format change. Trucks and buses had cassette decks, and cassettes froze their rotation around 1999. Autos skipped that step and went more or less straight to phones and memory cards, which arrived when Nadeem-Shravan and Anu Malik were still producing. So the auto caught a later decade and kept it.

Same country, same drivers, five years of difference in the hardware, and a visibly different playlist.

The rule of thumb

If it survives a bad speaker and an engine, it belongs. That single constraint explains the whole list: melody over production, vocals over arrangement, and not one song here that needs to be heard properly to work.

Straight answers

What songs play in an auto rickshaw?

Romantic Hindi film songs from roughly 1995 to 2006, played off a small speaker wired under the dashboard. Nadeem-Shravan and Anu Malik soundtracks dominate, sung mostly by Kumar Sanu, Alka Yagnik and Udit Narayan. Full list above.

Is this auto rickshaw playlist free?

Yes. The player at the top of this page streams free in your browser on desktop and mobile. There is no account, no sign-up and nothing to download.

How is the auto playlist different from the bus or truck one?

It runs later. A truck or bus rotation is anchored in the 1990s, while the auto sits in the late 90s and 2000s, with whole soundtracks appearing together rather than single hits.

Why do auto drivers play whole film soundtracks?

Because the music usually comes from one downloaded album folder rather than a curated list. Trips are short, nobody skips tracks while driving, and an album plays through in order for hours.

How many songs are on this playlist?

72. The source has 99 entries, but some duplicate the bus driver rotation on this site and a few are untitled uploads, so those were removed to keep each room distinct.

Who sings most auto rickshaw songs?

Kumar Sanu, Alka Yagnik and Udit Narayan carry most of it, with Sonu Nigam and Anuradha Paudwal close behind. Nadeem-Shravan and Anu Malik composed a large share of the soundtracks.

Can I play these auto wala songs on my phone?

Yes. The player is built for mobile as well as desktop, and the artwork switches to a portrait version on phones. Keep the tab open and it keeps playing.

Why is the sound quality in autos always bad?

The speaker is a small unpowered unit taped under the dash, competing with a two-stroke engine and open sides. That is why the rotation favours songs with a strong vocal line.
